The goal of occupational therapy is to promote health and well-being by improving participation in everyday life.

Types of Patients Seen

The Occupational Therapist will provide support to patients who may have a chronic condition, illness or injury and is experiencing difficulty with everyday tasks such as:

  • Dressing or showering
  • Meal preparation and house cleaning
  • Recreational activities and hobbies
  • Poor balance and risk of falling
  • Challenges with memory or concentration
  • Modifying, or returning to work
  • Driving
  • Caregiver roles and responsibilities
  • Exercise for lifestyle improvement

Treatment may include functional assessments, therapeutic exercises, education, adapting your work or home environment, recommending adaptive equipment or mobility aids and accessing funding for mobility aids.

The Occupational Therapist may also help caregivers to help minimize their risk of injury, manage caregiver stress, find balance in life, and connect them with community resources.

What to Expect

What you can expect at your appointment with your Occupational Therapist:

  • Your health and medical history will be collected and reviewed
  • Your physical abilities or activity tolerance will be assessed
  • Your use of mobility aids or braces may be reviewed
  • Your interests and hobbies will be identified and may be used as part of your therapy program
  • You will receive information about your condition and explore strategies for managing and improving function
  • Your OT will work with you to identify issues and establish goals that will improve your condition and everyday life

Appointment Information

Patients are to be referred to the Occupational Therapist by their Primary Care Provider or by another interdisciplinary health care professional.
